Iran and Syria in the crosshairs of the IAEA

Iran and Syria have been criticized for their lack of cooperation during the spring meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) which opened in Vienna Monday, March 7. "Iran does not provide the necessary cooperation to the Agency to provide credible evidence of a lack of material and undeclared nuclear activities," lamented the director general of the IAEA, Yukiya Amano, in his inaugural speech.

He said the agency is in fact unable to clarify whether "all nuclear materials are used for peaceful purposes" as assured Tehran. IAEA calls on Iran to "take a step" toward more cooperation. Syria, she is suspected of maintaining suspected nuclear sites and not to let the IAEA inspect. In 2007, the site of Al-Kibar had been bombed by Israel, which assumed that housed a nuclear reactor.

The lack of cooperation from Damascus "prevents the agency forward," says Mr. Amano, who welcomes, however, some overtures. Diplomats in Vienna say that present Iran and Syria should not be put under pressure after the meeting, particularly because of the "Arab Spring," which leaves Western embassies undecided on what to adopt and about how events could change the game with these two countries.
