Former French President, Jacques Chirac, 78, will not sit tomorrow at the dock, as planned. His expected and historic corruption trial in its early mayor of Paris (1977-1995), and delayed more than fifteen years of immunity issues relating to his office, even a few months delay, at least until June. A constitutional complaint filed late Friday by the attorney for former Chief of Staff of the then mayor of Paris, has also accused the hearing stopped dead in its second meeting, held today.
The action, called "priority of constitutional law" is a legal instrument in force for one year and allows an attorney wield it finds that the defendant will steal some of their constitutional rights. The lawyer believes that the defendant, and by extension the other defendants, including Chirac, he should have been prescribed and their crimes.
Hence the appeal. The Correctional Court today has accepted the appeal for a study and has forwarded the case to the Court of Cassation (Supreme Court species), which in turn, if appropriate, will forward it to the Constitutional Court. Conclusion: The trial was not held again until three months minimum.
Chirac is accused of devising a system whereby employees thirty then his party, the RPR, "and a handful of friends and acquaintances, benefited from a monthly salary paid entirely by the city of Paris without any exercise of smallest municipal activity. In some cases this was a covert way to fund the party.
In others, mere cronyism. Karsenti Jérôme, a lawyer for civil plaintiffs has reported today, just learned of the postponement, which the court's decision was "a denial of justice." He added: "Now it is clear how there are justices of various speeds and how it is not surprising that Marine Le Pen gets so high in the polls." For his part, Chirac, which carries health problems (has difficulty walking, hearing and suffers from memory failure), through a statement, says "take note" of the delay and predicts that when the trial will resume this in the room.
Something that has not done yesterday and today: the court two days excused for health reasons as it would treat purely procedural issues.
