A reformist candidate to succeed Gaddafi

He had emerged as a reformer within the regime of his father, Muamah Gaddafi, but with his incendiary speech yesterday showed his face harder. Saif Islam (Sword of Islam), the natural successor of his father, gave no chance for any change in Libya, despite protests in several cities, and warned that it will defend the unity of the country "until the last man falls ".

Born in 1972 in a military base in Tripoli, Islam is the second child of eight is Gaddafi. He studied architecture at Tripoli and Vienna and has even a study in the Libyan capital. Had some diplomatic missions to Arab countries, although his first political movement was recognized when he helped negotiate the release of six foreign health had been sentenced to death in Libya.

Appeared on the international scene in 2000 when he negotiated the release of a restructuring captured by Islamic terrorists in the Philippines. Since 2003 he has played significant roles in conflict management, such as the Lockerbie case and the dismantling of nuclear program, the resolution allowed Libya to rehabilitate and improve its image.

His reformist spirit comes because he was against revolutionary committees, which impose political orthodoxy. Had also shown signs of being a liberal on economic matters. As opposition leaders have, their goal has always been to deepen relations with the outside commercial before granting more rights and freedoms.

Westerners who worked with him say he is intelligent, educated and ready to call the prime minister or his father. Qaddafi's successor in October 2009, his father appointed him his successor and the Libyan government number two, reports Ignacio Cembrero. It was a secret meeting in Sebha, a desert oasis 800 km south of Tripoli.

They quoted Gaddafi called popular and social controls, an assembly of tribal chiefs and notables who is, in theory, the highest ranking executive. The site chosen by Gaddafi was important and also the announcement. Sebha studied in high school and woke up to politics. A notable gathered there encouraged them to give an important place to the second of his sons, the leader asked that the charge has not led to his admission to the Government, because then it would not last more than four years and Saif Islam needed more time to push through his reforms.

He even suggested that he might let your child take charge of national affairs while he would "solve the problems of Africa." The content of the meeting of Sebha was, in theory, confidential, but two newspapers Libyan Quryna and OAS, distilled some details probably commissioned by the authorities.

Had to prepare public opinion.
