France wants to give new impetus to the Union for the Mediterranean

France called Thursday, January 27 "all governments and peoples of Europe and the Mediterranean to give new impetus to the Union for the Mediterranean" (UFM), following the resignation Wednesday of its secretary general, Ahmad Massa'deh , which has invoked the need for "clear direction". Founded in 2008 on the initiative of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, the MFU comprises 43 countries: 27 EU, Turkey, Israel and Arab countries bordering the Mediterranean.

"More than ever, France is convinced that there must be political will to overcome differences to build a common house on both sides of the Mediterranean," he said at a press spokesman of the Ministry French Foreign Affairs, Bernard Valero. "We need the Mediterranean continues to be a place of conflict, violence, tragedy, to become a place of sharing, cooperation, a large area of co-development, creation, culture, peace," he added.

A diplomat of the UPM, the resignation of Ahmad Massa'deh shows his weariness with respect to the "paralysis" of the organization, powerless to overcome obstacles born of such Israeli-Palestinian conflict and with one vertex of Heads of State has been postponed twice in 2010. Bernard Valero assured that a "program of activities had been set for the current year" in various areas of cooperation.

He noted that work had been undertaken including the pollution of the Mediterranean, the establishment of land transport networks, the strengthening of civil protection or solar energy.
