Obama and Cuba

On 13 January, without much fanfare in the international press, President Obama has announced new measures regarding the conditions of travel and sending the U.S. currency to Cuba, to increase contacts between the two countries despite the embargo. Which has resulted now in a first disposition of the President is sent to the Department of Homeland Security and the Ministry of Treasury and State Department, which contains significant reforms.

With the motivation to "help support the efforts of the Cuban people so freely and determine their destiny, helping direct the civil society." It is fixed, for example, the ability to send digits of not more than $ 500 each quarter to the Caribbean island. For the Obama administration in this way so it will give a significant help to the reunification of Cuban families separated.

Yet not all Cubans living in the States will benefit from the opportunity. Will, in fact, except those that have a major political office. The new measures also include intensified, if not an actual promotion of exchanges between educational institutions and educational institutions, the recognition of credits for academic courses, support for professional training workshops on Cuban territory and forms of subsidy religious groups that want to establish with the Cuban community forms of collaboration and exchange.

This has been hailed as part of an early form of "thaw" on the part of States in respect of social isolation, and in some ways was even interpreted as the beginning of a policy of support for the next transition increasingly postcastrista . However, the Havana government has not refrained from criticism.

Raul Castro pointed out that in fact there were already similar openings in the Clinton administration and then be reprocessed by George Bush, but we are still far from a lifting of the embargo. The situation is therefore very open and undefined, and these first moves Obama made his seem to indicate that the Cuban government the right way to lay the foundations for cooperation between the two countries in the direction of free markets.

And that was after Fidel Castro, just a week ago, said that the recent history of Cuba shows that Latin America does not need the United States. And while the sixth congress of the Cuban Communist Party, which has always held a few days ago, said that there will never be a capitalist transformation of the island.

It's appropriate to say that the future of the revolution is suspended between utopia and realism.
