U.S. envoy in Syria: Obama occupied orphaned new ambassador

President Obama has named Robert Ford ambassador to Syria. The post had been vacant since February 2005. With the appointment of Ford during the holiday recess of the Senate Obama bypasses the resistance of the Republicans in Congress - at least for now. Washington - The U.S. has an ambassador in Syria again.

Barack Obama called on Congress by the experienced Middle East diplomat Robert Ford to the post that was vacant for more than five years. Ford was former deputy U.S. ambassador in Iraq. Obama used the current holiday recess of the Senate to move beyond the continuing opposition of the Republicans in Congress.

Ford is to help Syria can further involve in the Middle East peace process. In June 2009, Obama's government had announced its intention to occupy the post of ambassador in Damascus. Ford is the first U.S. ambassador to Syria since February 2005. At that time, Obama's predecessor, George W. Bush's chief diplomat because of the alleged involvement of Syrian intelligence in the assassination of Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri was dismissed. Normally, the Senate must approve the election of top offices. But a number of Republicans had a vote to confirm the block in February of Obama nominated Ford.

They oppose the resumption of diplomatic relations with Syria from a high level. The cast of top jobs during session breaks, the Senate is a trick, the presidents of both parties have applied repeatedly to enforce their respective candidates. Then you can dispense with a confirmation by the Conference Board if they are not in use, but the President deems the appeal as absolutely essential to safeguard national interests.

However, Obama with such appeals no permanent charter. Ford, the Senate must confirm the requirements, according to the end of 2011 - otherwise he loses his job. Any U.S. government going to see when choosing their candidates for ambassadorial posts to opposition in the Senate, said a senior U.S.

official who wished to remain anonymous. But the "degree of Republican opposition to the candidates proposed by Mr Obama is unprecedented," he added to justify the actions of the president. Besides Ford Francis Ricciardone Obama summoned the U.S. ambassador to Turkey. Norman iron to the U.S. represented the future in the Czech Republic, Matthew Bryza in Azerbaijan.
