Paris recommends French families to leave Cote d'Ivoire

France has once again recommended, Friday, Dec. 31, its nationals to leave Ivory Coast temporarily due to "acute political crisis" facing the country since November 28. "While foreign nationals are not until now directly threatened, the French authorities renew their board to postpone travel plans to Côte d'Ivoire and, to all French people who can, especially for families with children, to leave temporarily Côte d'Ivoire pending normalization of the situation, "said in a statement the Quai d'Orsay.

The return of French schools in Côte d'Ivoire, scheduled for 5 January, will also be extended to 17 January. Some 15,000 French nationals live in the country. Outgoing President Laurent Gbagbo refuses to give way to Alassane Ouattara, recognized internationally as the winner of the presidential election.

The UN says fighting between the two camps have caused 179 deaths since mid-December, most supporters of Ouattara. Figures disputed by the Gbagbo government, which speaks of 53 dead, including 14 members of security forces loyal to him since the presidential election of 28 November.
