Afghanistan, Karzai at the funeral of his brother

Afghan President Hamid Karzai opened the long funeral procession that has cut Kandahar this morning to carry the coffin of his brother Ahmed Wali Karzai to the native village, Karz, about twenty kilometers from the most important city in southern Afghanistan. The security measures were impressive. Afghan police officers and soldiers of the national army were deployed along the entire route, while the body of Wali Karzai was accompanied by thousands of people.

Despite the deployment of forces, however, the insurgents have tried to take this opportunity to strike again, after the murder of Wali Karzai, which took place yesterday at the hands of one of his bodyguards. Gulab Mangal, governor of Helmand province, is in fact managed to avoid an explosion a few yards that hit the convoy that accompanied him to the funeral.

Two other explosions, according to Reuters, were heard in the city of Kandahar, but it is not clear yet what were the objectives. President Karzai has used the press conference that closed the tour in Afghanistan, French President Nicolas Sarkozy to remember his brother. Nothing personal, however: "Such is life in Afghanistan - Karzai told reporters - Every family has suffered, but we hope that suffering will end soon." According to leaked entourage of Afghan President Karzai is upset about the assassination of his brother.
