Voices from the Battle of Zawiya "terrible day, will be total war"

TRIPOLI - The armed forces of Colonel Qaddafi launched a fresh onslaught against the rebel city of Zawiya, 45 km from Tripoli to the border with Tunisia. Zawiya is a port and an important oil center in Tripoli from 15 days has rebelled against the regime of Colonel. The rebels, backed by many who have left the military regime, had settled in the center of the city last Sunday a group of international journalists, taking advantage of a mistake of the government press office, failed to meet them in a moment of respite, right in the center of the city.

Conflicting reports last night spoke of an assault troops that Gaddafi had completely cleared the city, but at night the rebels were able to regroup, and above all they are stationed in the buildings surrounding the central area of the city. "Now people are returning to Gaddafi with 15 tanks and armored vehicles, they are shooting at everything that moves, the houses on both sides of the streets, killing women and children living in there to block our response," said Republic on the phone to one of the young people we met last Sunday.

The story coincides with what in these minutes are reporting the two Arab television better informed on the situation in Libya, Al Arabiya and Al Jazeera. According to our reconstruction, the rebels were forced to evacuate from the central square "martyrs", but the night had taken refuge in its buildings around the central area.

Now the tanks and machine guns firing on the buildings of Gadhafi to kill the rebels, thus also affecting the families trapped inside the apartments since the clashes. Last night, several cars full of civilians fleeing the city would be hit by the soldiers of the regime and forced to return in the night or dispersed in the countryside.

Another rebel spokesman, speaking on the phone with Maria Golovnina Reuters journalist who is here with us at the hotel Rixos hotel in Tripoli, said that "tanks are parties to the attack, it is clear that today there will be something terrible, it will be total war. They closed all the roads, they are shooting with the guns to cover their soldiers advancing against us.

" This is Zawiya of the bloodiest battles fought by Gaddafi, because the city is on the outskirts of Tripoli, in the heart of an area that essentially has been for days under the supervision of Colonel, in contrast to the Cyrenaica, the eastern part of Libya firmly in control of the rebels.

"Without help from abroad will not do to dismiss the tanks of the system, the world, Italy, America should help us, these criminals are bombing a people to maintain power," he repeated this morning on the phone Republic to a spokesman for the rebels.
