Seventy soldiers have been killed during two days of violent clashes between the army of South Sudan and rebels in the oil states of Unity and Upper Nile, announced Friday, March 18, a spokesman the Confederate Army. Thirty soldiers, at least, and eleven rebels died in fighting that erupted Thursday morning in Mayom County in the state of Unity, said Philip Aguer, spokesman of the People's Liberation Army Sudan (SPLA).
"The fighting was intense, but now we pursue the rebels," he added, noting that thirty-four soldiers were wounded. "The group split into two, one went to the northern border, the other in a swampy area." In the neighboring state of Upper Nile, a confrontation between the army and militiamen has made twenty-nine dead, twenty-five rebels and four soldiers.
Aguer says, this rebel group is responsible for a deadly attack on Saturday against the state capital, Malakal.
