Argentina .- Videla refuses to testify in court because he believes that his defense "meaningless"

BUENOS AIRES, Mar 29 Former Argentine dictator Jorge Rafael Videla has refused Tuesday to give his statement before a court in Buenos Aires on the grounds that his defense at trial for the theft of babies during the military regime (1976-1983) "meaningless" because he is "doomed." Videla was detained in the prison of the military base in Campo de Mayo, spoke before the Federal Court of Buenos Aires # 6 via a videoconference, after forensic scientists announced that the former dictator should be between 45 and 60 days of rest after presenting multiple fractures in his arm.

"I am convicted in advance and do not offer a defense that, in my view, is meaningless," he said in testimony before the judges Maria del Carmen Roqueta, Julio Luis Panelo and Domingo Luis Altieri. "With all due respect I must point out that the courts lack jurisdiction and competence to judge," he underlined.

Former repressor has ensured that the alleged harassment began in 1983 during the government of Raul Alfonsin, when the decree was issued that allowed the holding of public trial against three former commanders of the military junta that usurped power on 24 March 1976 and in which Videla was sentenced to "life imprisonment and dismissal," reports the official agency Telam.

The former oppressors Reynaldo Bignone, Jorge 'El Tigre' Acosta, Santiago Omar Riveros, Ruben Franco, Antonio Vanek, John Azic, and Dr.

Jorge Magnacca, also refused to testify days ago in the same cause. Acosta had denied the figures of human rights organizations on the number of victims during the dictatorship. "There are 30,000 missing and 500 babies stolen and that lie will lead us to a new civil war trotzkista cutting," he assured, by clarifying that "can not be attributed to the armed forces accused of misappropriation of children" because " there was no plan.

" The trial began a month ago but the case began more than fourteen years ago when the organization Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo filed a complaint of 'Systematic Plan' that would have launched the oppressors to take over his grandchildren, taking advantage of the weaknesses of the judicial system dictatorship.

The kidnapping and disappearance of children of opponents would have been a practice that was started under the Process of National Reorganization. Some babies were taken illegally minutes after birth in secret prisons where they were confined to their mothers. Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo - the organization responsible for finding missing children - an estimated 500 children have been abducted in these circumstances.
