5.8 degrees quake shakes China

A 5.8-magnitude quake killed at least 22 dead and 200 injured, and demolishing houses and damaged a hotel and a supermarket at the southwest corner of the country near the border with Myanmar, officials and news media. Several witnesses said that several people were trapped under the debris and damage caused by the quake, centered in Yingjiang County in Yunnan province, reported official news agency Xinhua.

China Central Television said the quake struck while many people were at home when returning to the traditional lunch break. Besides the 22 dead, 201 people were injured, said the medium, and said that at least two students were among the casualties but gave no details. The state broadcaster showed several buildings whose foundations had cracked and given way.

The television reported that a hundred armed policemen, firefighters and soldiers used three excavators to rescue a man and a girl trapped under the rubble of a four-storey building had partially collapsed. Another officer on duty at the center, Gao Shaotang, said several houses had collapsed.

The site of the government's seismological center said the quake internet that struck Yunnan by 01:00 pm (05:00 GMT) was detected at 10 km depth (six miles). The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 5.4 at a depth of more than 35 kilometers (21 miles.). The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was of magnitude 5.8 degrees.

The epicenter is in a mountainous area two thousand 400 kilometers (thousand 500 miles) southwest of Beijing near the border with Myanmar.
