Algeria: Paris calls the protests "without violence"

France hopes that the demonstrations could take place in Algeria "freely and without violence," said Monday, the Foreign Ministry, while the Algerian opposition announced a new event Saturday, Feb. 19. "Regarding the events in Algiers and in the larger cities, which is important to us is that freedom of expression is respected and that the demonstrations could take place freely and without violence," said Door Speaker of the Quai d'Orsay, Bernard Valero.

A march of the opposition in Algeria, calling the National Coordination for Democracy and Change (NCCD), which was prohibited, had met Saturday to enhanced safety feature. A march is planned next Saturday. Bernard Valero also noted that the implementation of measures in Algeria to lift emergency rule and openness of audiovisual media, promised by the regime, would "clearly a step in the right direction" .

On 3 February, the Cabinet announced the lifting of the next state of emergency in force since nineteen years together with a series of liberalization measures. The comments of France, former colonial power, are still considered very carefully, even distrust, Algeria.
