Brazil renews its Army to guard the border

Brazil has a whopping 16,000 km of border which end up being a sieve for arms trafficking, drug smuggling and prostitution. An estimated 90% of the violence wracking the country comes from drug trafficking and weapons, and this goes across borders because Brazil does not produce drugs: all comes from abroad illegally, mostly from Bolivia.

For the hard scrutiny of a border area as impressive, the new Government of Dilma Rousseff has decided to invest a fortune to the creation of the Integrated Border Surveillance (Sisfron), beginning with the modernization of the Armed Forces on a budget U.S. $ 6,000 million (4659.27 million), according to published diarioFolha of Sao Paulo.

The new surveillance system the Army will be conducted in three stages. The project includes radar imaging and communication in different degrees of sophistication, unmanned aerial vehicles and tanks to the border with the focus in the Amazon. The operational base will be the Special squads Borders (PEF), which will move from the current 21 to 49.

According to the Government, the porosity of borders, where the military has police powers since 1999, "is the number one problem of the country's security." After operations in the airspace surveillance carried out so far, smuggling and drug trafficking and weapons were moved to the roads and waterways, and then come to the great centers of the country, for example, over a thousand favelas of Rio de Janeiro.

Millionaire Project On 17 December, Brazil's Embraer and eight international companies in the defense area sent representatives to Brasilia to receive information about new project millionaire Government in the modernization of the Army for border surveillance. Expected by the Government is that companies form consortia, as none of them alone would be able to carry out such an ambitious project. Proposals must be submitted by 31 of this month and will be reviewed by the Communications Center and the Army Electronic Warfare (Ccomgex) and the Atech, a company specializing in software development, which conducted the initial study viability.

According to information obtained by Folha, the commission will consider two very specific demands: the "national domain technology" since its inception and "including commercial compensation mechanisms, giving priority to technology transfer mechanisms for the industrial base Brazilian defense.

" This modernization of the Army for border surveillance enters a more general plan to renovate the entire defense system in Brazil, especially considering the defense of the Amazon, one of the most crucial and coveted from outside the country. The investment began with the nuclear-powered submarine in the Navy and the proposed purchase, also a millionaire, a new fleet of fighter jets, which may be awarded to a foreign company has not yet been decided.

Former President Lula made the decision to his successor Rousseff, who shall take a final decision the next few months. Now the time has come to modernize the Army.
