New York could become the sixth U.S. state to celebrate same-sex marriages.

On Monday, New York could become the sixth U.S. state to celebrate same-sex marriages. The Democratic governor Andrew Cuomo, a passionate supporter of gay rights, has obtained the support of two Republican senators, but it needs at least one more vote to pass the measure.

The Republicans are divided. The churches, especially the Catholic Church, protesting. The gay groups and their allies are hoping that this is the right time.  New York would become the most populous state in America to introduce the '"equal marriage" (the others being Massachusetts, Iowa, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, as well as Washington, DC).

The political, symbolic, cultural choice is enormous, so as to influence the legislatures of other states, as well as the decisions of many courts in the country.
