Convicted of rape, Moshe Katsav won several months of freedom before his trial on appeal

Jerusalem Correspondent - In deciding, Wednesday, May 18, the former president could avoid carrying out his prison sentence for rape, until his appeal hearing, Judge Yoram Danziger identified two elements: Moshe Katsav will not take a plane to flee the country, and, insofar as it is unlikely to reoffend, it does not constitute a "public danger".

In announcing this decision very controversial, the former head of Israel (2000-2007), convicted in March and sentenced to seven years in prison after being convicted of two rapes, different indecent acts and sexual harassment against three employees who worked under him, has exulted: "A weight has been removed from my shoulders, there are still judges in Jerusalem!" Katsav, who is defended by lawyers very famous and very expensive, so get several months of respite.

The first rape he was convicted took place in a Jerusalem hotel on the person "A", an employee of the Ministry of Tourism, which Mr Katsav was minister from 1996 to 1999. In July 2006, he had very carelessly filed a complaint against "A" for blackmail, which was quickly revealed the extent of the depravity of the eighth president of the State of Israel.

On 21 September of that year, the number of women accusing Katsav of sexual assault was eight. In June 2007, her lawyers had reached a settlement with the law: their client agreed to plead guilty to various charges of sexual harassment. In exchange, he received a suspended prison sentence, while paying financial compensation to two of his victims.

As for charges of rape, they were ... abandoned. The market seemed more favorable to such an extent that the Israeli public was ulcerated. And Moshe Katsav has played all out, sure he would be able to clear his name. Bad pick: his trial left no doubt about his guilt. Since then, his lawyers have argued that the succession of Moshe Katsav sex with "A" was consensual, and that at the time of the rape, he was somewhere else ...

The prosecution has long fought for the former president is treated like any other accused. J. Danziger returned the argument, saying that "there is no need to deny" Katsav "of his rights under the pretext of the eminent position it has held" faith in what he does not see why the person should remain behind bars until trial of the Supreme Court.

The decision provoked an outcry from women's organizations and victims' families, who denounced leveled at a blow to all victims of rape. One thing is sure: Mr. Katsav, who has already spent between 2 and 3 million shekels (between 400 and 600 000 euros), will have to keep paying his lawyers.

In 2007, his supporters had created the organization "The real justice will be done" in order to collect donations. In the process, the website "The truth about the affair Moshe Katsav" trying to destroy the credibility of women who accused the former president. In Thursday's Haaretz, columnist Neri Livneh protests against a two-tier justice in favor of the former head of state.

She draws a parallel with "a character much more important that Katsav, who was imprisoned in the United States even before his rape trial, Dominique Strauss-Kahn" ... Laurent Zecchini
