It aggravates the budget of the first federal aid floods and controversy

RIO DE JANEIRO - At least 271 people have lost their lives in floods and landslides that are developing in the knee region Serrana, in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro. And the weather does not foresee an improvement in the short term. According to experts, in the last hours in the area have fallen 84% of the predicted rainfall for the entire month of January.

The places most affected by the floods is Teresopolis, a hundred kilometers from the state capital: the city budget is at least 130 deaths. Other 107 victims were registered in Nova Friburgo, 140 km north of Rio. Among the latter there are at least three firefighters, were swept away by a landslide while engaged in rescue operations.

Finally, 34 people died in Petropolis. In addition, 13 people were killed, again because of heavy rains in the State of Sao Paulo. Among the victims was the famous Brazilian fashion designer Daniela Conolly, died along with six members of his family, including father, mother and son for two years.

The Conolly and family were in a villa rented for the birthday of the father in the village of Itaipava, a hundred miles from Rio de Janeiro. The villa is Pedro Gouveia, brother of the President of Confindustria in Rio (Firjan), Eduardo, and is located in front of a tourist village called 'Tambo de los Incas', swept away by mud and rain, but at the time of the landslide was uninhabited.

"In some places it seems a scene of war - said the Brazilian minister of Integration, Fernando Bezerra, after flying over some of the flooded areas - What we saw was a desolate landscape, caused by the violence of the water and landslides in the hills who have made deaths and serious damage to roads, housing and infrastructure in the area.

" "Of the areas that we flew around to the municipalities of Petropolis, Teresopolis and Nova Friburgo, we believe that the worst situation is to this center," he said Bezerra, also noting that "many rural areas have remained isolated in Freiburg." Dilma Rousseff The President should visit the affected areas today, while the federal government has allocated the first funds of 500 million dollars earmarked for reconstruction and the Civil Protection: According to the Minister of Environment of the state of Rio, Carlos Minc, the large number of victims is due to the combination of a natural disaster with the failure of several prefects.

The controversies have also affected the federal government, who has been promised but never released funds for the accommodation and the safety of the area - a favorite summer resort for the inhabitants of Rio - considered a landslide risk. As for the displaced, at least 1,900 people have been forced to flee their homes in Nova Friburgo and are currently housed in the stadium located in the city center.

The authorities do not exclude that the death toll could rise due to the numerous landslides. If that year is considered the worst natural disaster ever to hit the region, but this is not an unusual event, especially in this season: in 2010 the deaths caused by the floods across the country have been 473, and in January last heavy rains had caused 52 deaths in Ilha Grande and Angra, two resorts near Rio.
