At least 45 dead and 110 wounded in two suicide bombings in Iraq

At least 45 Shiite worshipers were killed today and another 110 have been wounded by two suicide bombings in the northern and the southern city of Kerbala, 110 km south of Baghdad, police said. The sources explained that the victims were pilgrims who were to participate in the celebrations of Arbainiya, the holiday that commemorates the 40 days of the death of Imam Hussein, grandson of the prophet Muhammad and third most important magnet for the Shia community.

The two suicide bombers wearing explosive belt, detonated the charges on the north and south entrances of the city in a short period of time. Attacks on Shiite pilgrims have multiplied in recent days with the closeness of Arbainiya, held on Sunday. This morning, two people including a child, were killed and 17 wounded in two attacks on Shiite pilgrims in Baghdad and Diyala province, northeast of the capital.

Also, this double attack comes just two days after at least 60 people were killed and 150 wounded in an attack by a suicide against a recruitment center for Iraqi police in the city of Tikrit. According to police sources, the bomber detonated the explosive charge was attached to the body inside the building where many volunteers flocked to join the Guard.

This rise in violence coincided with negotiations between different political groups to decide the names of the defense and interior ministers in the new Iraqi government offices temporarily occupied the prime minister, Nuri al-Maliki.
