RIO DE JANEIRO, 18 The death toll from torrential rains that have fallen in recent days in the state of Rio de Janeiro (southeastern Brazil) amounted to 676, with the balance released today by the Civil Police. Nova Friburgo city remains the hardest hit by the rains with a total of 319 deaths. Teresópolis followed with 277 dead and Petrópolis with 56 deaths, reported the official Agencia Brasil.
Civil Defense had reported on Monday a dozen deaths in the town of San José del Valle, but officials clarified that the corpses were from people from other municipalities that had been washed away. The government of Rio de Janeiro this weekend declared a state of emergency in Nova Friburgo, Petrópolis Teresópolis and as a result of the devastation caused by torrential.
It is estimated that rebuilding the affected areas will cost 2 billion reais (894.5 million euros).
