Arrested the former dictator Duvalier "Baby Doc must be questioned"

PORT AU PRINCE - In exile in France for 25 years, the former Haitian dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier, better known as Baby Doc, he returned to Haiti and was arrested by police for questioning. Two judges and a dozen policemen entered the hotel where he had arranged Duvalier on Sunday and escorted in a judicial office in Port-au-Prince.

The confirmation came from his lawyer Reynold Georges. The Haitian authorities want to know if Baby Doc, who is now 59 years old and is accused of torture and abuse during his years in power (1971-1986), has taken possession of public money. Duvalier had returned to "lend a hand" to small and impoverished Caribbean country, developed further to its knees by an earthquake a year ago and the current epidemic of cholera.

This would explain at a press conference in the afternoon. The arrest of Baby Doc, announced in court circles, was asked by the prosecutor general in Haiti. Already at the dawn of day some policemen tried to execute the order but Duvalier was able to stay barricaded in the luxury hotel 'Karibe' Port-au-Prince.

"This is not a presence with political purposes," he reiterated his girlfriend, Veronique Roy, "is a gesture of solidarity." The woman had then denied that the agents raided the hotel had "something to do with us." Instead, a few hours later at the same hotel were presented the Attorney General, Aristidas Auguste, accompanied by a second magistrate, Gabriel Ambroise, and a team of special police forces.

After questioning the investigators will decide whether indicted for aggravated embezzlement. Yesterday, Premier Jean-Max Bellerive had stated that the former dictator was "free to return home" because he too is a citizen of Haiti. " President and dictator of Haiti from his father's death in April of 1971, until 1986, Jean-Claude Duvalier in the late seventies adopted repressive methods of government and put under control the press.

In 1985, under pressure from the international community, granted a new constitution that established the post of prime minister. In 1986 a revolt erupted that forced him to flee. He settled in France, but never got officially granted political asylum. In 2004, he announced his intention to return to Haiti and to stand in presidential elections, but the ad was not followed up until yesterday, when he returned home.
