"It's very embarrassing," he lamented. The Red Cross has over one hundred professionals working in the area, where 269 people have died in the last six days. All of them have not been able to continue to rescue and care of thousands of people affected by disability of local authorities.
A municipal police team was presented this morning in the Retiro neighborhood to prevent the departure of the rescue teams. "They came without any documentation to allow us to work," said Eliane Moraes Leite, a social worker of the NGO. Private entrepreneurs had given to the Red Cross three houses to organize professional and receive gifts, but the activities have been suspended.
"More than a hundred professionals, including physicians, nurses and volunteers were here giving their support," stated Moraes. The mayor, however, assured that they are working alongside the charity. "This is the goal: working together towards the population and those affected by a major storm" in Rio de Janeiro, said an official note released by O Globo.
The death toll from heavy rains in the state of Rio de Janeiro on Monday has risen to 652, with Nova Friburgo, Petrópolis Teresópolis and municipalities hardest hit with more than 6,000 people affected by floods and landslides. Tons of humanitarian aid have been unable to reach these towns, which were declared state of calamity due to the lack of coordination of local agencies and the poor condition of paths that have left incommunicado in the mountainous region of Rio Janeiro.
