New York passed the ban on smoking in outdoor

It will now be forbidden to smoke a little away on the lawns of Central Park. After the Spaniards, it is now the turn of New Yorkers having to comply with a particularly restrictive tobacco legislation. The New York City Council adopted Wednesday, February 3, prohibition of smoking in its parks, beaches and other outdoor venues.

The ban, immediately welcomed by the mayor, Michael Bloomberg, 1700 extends to parks and beaches about 22 kilometers from the city, as well as pedestrian areas like Times Square or walking, Brighton Beach in Brooklyn. Michael Bloomberg, a former smoker became fierce opponent of smoking, had met with strong opposition in 2003 when he banned smoking in bars and restaurants.

It was at that date, a pioneer in the fight against passive smoking, but since then hundreds of cities across the country, including Chicago and Los Angeles have banned smoking in parks and on beaches. Elected officials have adopted the text by 36 votes to 12 against, after the signature of the mayor, the ban takes effect in three months.

Fines, $ 50 (36 euros) will be imposed by the Parks Police, who patrol also in town to conduct health inspections, including in restaurants and markets. "This summer, New Yorkers looking for fresh air and rest will be able to breathe and sit on beaches that are not littered with cigarette butts," said a statement from the mayor.

Michael Bloomberg's efforts to improve the quality of life of the most populous U.S. city earned him re-elected in 2009 for a third term in succession, but his detractors accuse him to show strength. When presenting the bill, a few months ago, smokers in New York had denounced a measure they consider as unfair, saying it violates civil liberties and human rights.

The New York Magazineironisait as it was then the sense of priorities of government: "Because, you know, with all these factories and traffic jams near Times Square, is of course the cigarette pollutes the atmosphere ". Short tour of Europe bans smoking
