BUENOS AIRES, 1 Feb. The Federal Administration of Public Revenue (AFIP) in Argentina has reported the existence of three maize plantings in the Paraje Monte del Rosario, province of Córdoba (center) belonging to a multinational company, where workers were treated as slaves. "The work performed under the conditions we detected is illegal, and if the work is given in subhuman conditions, such as those detected in this field, we are talking about slavery, that in the XXI century we can not let that happen," said the director AFIP, Ricardo Echegaray.
A total of 158 people working in "unhealthy and precarious conditions" in three fields operated by the company Adecco Specialities, subcontracted by Pioneer Argentina. Each employee was paid about 93 pesos (17 euros) at the end of the day, which was deducted a percentage of the damage caused to plants to shell corn, the exact amount unknown.
Apparently, none of the employees, mostly from the province of Santiago del Estero (north), could leave the plantation to receive the approval of the head, causing serious transportation problems because the nearest public bus pass at 40 miles distance. In light of these facts, the AFIP shall submit a complaint for trafficking and reduced to servitude to the Ministry of Labour and the corresponding judicial seat, which those responsible could face prison terms of between two and six years, according to Telam agency reported.
