Former Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, who fled his country on 14 January under pressure from a popular revolt, is "in a coma for two days in a Saudi hospital after suffering a stroke, said Thursday a family friend. He was ambassador to Poland, minister and prime minister HabibBurguiba, which deposed by a coup in 1987, assuming the presidency on November 7. He won the 1989 presidential election. In 2002 amended the Constitution in order to keep performing to the election. He was reelected last October 25, 2009.
In December of 2010 and beginning of 2011 there was a series of street demonstrations demanding the resignation of president by the excessive prices of basic foodstuffs, unemployment and social improvements. During these riots and after the interior minister had called for his resignation, announced on national television he would not appear in the upcoming 2014 elections.
On January 14, 2011, at the scale of the protest left the country leaving the government in charge of the Army, and traveled to Saudi Arabia where he took refuge after the collapse of his administration that gave inspiration to demonstrations that also toppled the president of Egypt Hosni Mubarak.
