QUITO, 17 Feb. Colombia has approved the Treaty establishing the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), being the tenth country to ratify it, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ecuador. This week, Ecuadorean Foreign Minister, Ricardo Patino, announced that the statutes of UNASUR will come into force on March 11, according to Article 26 of the international organization.
The process of ratification of the Treaty establishing was driven by the government of Rafael Correa last year when he exercised the presidency of the institution temporarily. According to the bulletin, the ratification of Colombia confirms the interest of the South American countries to consolidate the body of UNASUR, as well as the growing importance of this body of Integration.
Thus, Colombia is in addition to Uruguay, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Surinam and Venezuela, countries that have ratified the treaty. However, Brazil and Paraguay are still to ratify the document in their parliaments.
