Two policemen were killed and several people including a sub-prefect had disappeared during an attack in Bakassi, Cameroon, on the night of Sunday 6 Monday, February 7. "Around 3 o'clock in the morning, rebels attacked the town of Bonjo, where they killed two policemen. They then attacked the town of Akwa ', told the condition of anonymity under an administrative authority of the Bakassi area where the two localities.
"Since then we have no news of the sub-prefect of the district, the brigade commander of the [police] of the city and the Commissioner [of Police]," said the authority attached from Yaoundé. According to a source close to security services, the two attacks were conducted by the Africa Marine Commando (AMC), presented as the main rebel group active in Bakassi and responsible for an attack of a oil rig who made six died in November 2010.
This source, who said he could speak to a member of the CMA, said "the rebels have confirmed killed [at least] a gendarme Bonjo. They say they have twelve people, including a sub-prefect." For three years, attacks and kidnappings at sea - often attributed by the Cameroonian authorities to "pirate" - have increased off the Bakassi peninsula, a marshy region of 1 000 km2, difficult to access, potentially rich in oil and gas.
This peninsula has been a border dispute between Nigeria and Cameroon after which she was returned to Cameroon in 2008. During the official ceremony of handover, the Cameroonian flag was hoisted in Akwa, formerly controlled by Nigeria.
