Gaddafi's weapons: jets, tanks, soldiers

Ever since Muammar al-Gaddafi staged a coup in 1969 in Libya to power, he has expanded his country into a regional military power. Besides its own armed forces occupied the despot and 2500 mercenaries. With a population of around 6.3 million in the state has more than 100,000 weapons. The Libyan armed forces have a workforce of some 76,000 men 50 000 of them serve in the army (half of whom are conscripts).

The Air Force includes 18,000 troops. In 8000 the Navy men are given more than 50,000 reservists of the "people's militia". In addition to the regular armed forces, Gaddafi has especially loyal to it "Revolutionary Guard" with about 3,000 men this heavily armed troops, tanks and even rockets.

For decades, Libya also employs foreign mercenaries. As a self-proclaimed leader of the Arab world, Qaddafi had in 1972 set up an "Islamic Legion". Its soldiers were recruited mainly in the Sahel countries of Mali, Niger, Chad and Sudan and in Pakistan. Later, also mercenaries from Nigeria, Liberia, Ethiopia, Somalia, India and other countries have been added.

The current strength of the "Legion" is estimated at 2,500 men. The Libyan armed forces are equipped with modern weapons. The Army has 2205 battle tanks, 180 of the Russian T-90S and 200 T-72. The number of artillery guns will be given at least 2421st The different branches have a total of 685 missiles of different range.

Among the 374 combat aircraft, about 30 French Mirage fighters and seven Russian Tupolev-22 bombers. The 35 helicopters are manufactured in Russia. The warships include two frigates, a corvette, two submarines and 14 patrol boats. Libya is at present have no chemical weapons. Declared the end of 2003 because of Qaddafi's support of global terrorism as a "rogue state" isolated country's renunciation of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons of mass destruction (chemical weapons).

Foreign inspectors found after chemical weapons and materials for the production of biological weapons. Most of the weapons come from EU countries in 2004 there were, according to the The Hague office for the prohibition of chemical weapons (OPCW), several hundred thousand tons of materials that were used for the production of chemical weapons including mustard gas and sarin.

Under OPCW supervision in Libya have been destroyed thousands of bombs, which should be filled with chemicals. Following Gaddafi's renunciation of weapons of mass destruction, the European Union rose in 2004 to 18 years earlier-imposed arms embargo. Meanwhile, Libya relates much of its military equipment from EU countries.

In 2009 alone, the EU granted export licenses for some 344 million euros. Far more important than defense partner but is Russia. 2010 Tripoli in Moscow ordered weapons systems for 1.5 billion euros.
