Colombia: the process of release of two FARC hostages will resume

The Colombian president, Juan Manuel Santos, has authorized the resumption Tuesday, February 15 "in the coming days" of the process of release of two FARC hostages, said the president. Sunday night said the government had scandalized by the transmission of incorrect coordinates for the places of release of Corporal Sanmiguel Salin, abducted May 23, 2008 and age 25, and Police Major Guillermo Solorzano, 34, kidnapped on 4 June 2007.

The next day, the executive announced that he expected to meet with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), co-organizer of this process, before allowing or not the resumption of operations. The process of release of hostages the FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) are accompanied by security protocols involving the arrest for 36 hours of military operations in areas where these people are released, which means a green government.

Some argue therefore that the protocols can be exploited to allow transit of FARC members. The guerrillas announced Dec. 8 that it intends to release five hostages without compensation. Three were actually between Wednesday and Friday. Therefore still missing the call and the Corporal Major, who were to be released Sunday.

A sixth man, the police officer Carlos Ocampo, whose release was not initially planned, was also released Sunday.
