Jendoubi Kamel, 58, is a longtime opponent of the regime of Zine El-Ali AbidineBen. Exiled in France since 1994, he founded the Committee for the Respect of Freedoms and Human Rights in Tunisia. I want to breathe the air of freedom blowing through the new Tunisia. I also want to go to mourn the death of my father, who died in 2005 at the funeral which I could not attend, being deprived of his passport by the Tunisian authorities.
Finally, I want to go to Sidi Bouzid to pay tribute to Mohamed Bouazizi, our Jan Palach (Czechoslovak student who immolated himself by fire in January 1969 in Prague), whose death in December was used to trigger popular revolt. Through his sacrifice, the dream of a Tunisia free is coming true.
We must quickly restore popular sovereignty. We need to establish a transitional government involving all the forces of this country. And move towards a national conference to give the country a new constitution. General elections must be held as promptly as possible. Free and fair elections, not rigged, as was the case for decades in Tunisia Ben Ali.
It will not be easy in a country where there never had free elections since independence, but whose people are considered, rightly, as the most mature of the Arab-Muslim world. Emergency, must also declare a general amnesty for all political prisoners, release all those detained and allow and ensure the return of exiles.
I also pleaded for the creation of a Truth and Justice Commission to shed light on this period, from November 7, 1987, the date of the coming to power of Ben Ali, until today. No. He has no constitutional legitimacy for the lead. The Constitution is also very clear: it was the President of the National Assembly to assume the interim.
In addition, Mr. Ghannouchi, it seems, wants to establish a government dominated by the RCD (Democratic Constitutional Rally) party of Mr Ben Ali. That's where the Tunisians do not want. Ben Ali party, the RCD must go with him. Interview by J.-PT Article published in the edition of 16.01.11
