In Petrópolis there are 35 dead. This Thursday is scheduled to visit the new president, Dilma Rousseff, to Rio, where they fly over the areas hardest hit by heavy rains in recent days. The Government plans to release a consignment of 780 million reais (about 355 million euros) to Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo state in which there has also been at least thirteen dead.
The deputy governor of Rio and Works Minister, Luiz Fernando Peza, warned Thursday that the death toll could rise. "The situation is bleak, we are going with machines to remove debris and various parts of the city" of Fribourg, said, expressing concern "that has turned to rain." It has also indicated that rescue teams try to arrive by helicopter to areas where firefighters have been unable so far to access by land.
The environment secretary, Carlos Minc, had explained yesterday that the tragedy that has occurred in the mountain region of the state was a combination of "natural disaster with several governors historical irresponsibility."
