Afghan President Hamid Karzai Wednesday, January 26 will install the new Parliament after the September general elections, whose results remain in dispute, the president announced Monday night. President Karzai, "following the letter (addressed to him) members elected in accordance with the opinion of the Supreme Court (...) and in view of national interests, will install the National Assembly" January 26, said a statement from the presidency.
Members declared elected in late November had sent a letter Sunday to the Head of State asking him to install the new assembly Wednesday. The President had forwarded to the Supreme Court for review. Karzai had initially postponed the opening of the new Parliament in February 22. Furious, the deputies had decided to install the new room on the scheduled date, raising fears of an institutional crisis.
It will be the second parliament since the fall of the Taliban in late 2001, after that of 2005-2010.
