BUENOS AIRES, April 8. A federal judge in Argentina's La Rioja province (northwest) has ordered the arrest of former military dictator Jorge Rafael Videla and to be his interior minister Albano Harguindeguy in connection with the murder of Bishop Enrique Angelelli and activist, committed in August 1976.
Daniel Piedra Herrera judge signed the order Thursday after taking a statement from both, said Friday the Argentine newspaper 'La Nacion'. Joining them were twelve other people charged in connection with this case. Videla, 85, currently serving detention in the prison of the garrison of Campo de Mayo (Buenos Aires), while Harguindeguy, 83, is under house arrest.
Both are being tried in other cases involving crimes against humanity. Angelelli, bishop of La Rioja and a man deeply committed to human rights and social causes, died on August 4, 1976 in a messy car accident while traveling from province to Buenos Aires. At the time of the alleged accident, he recalled Friday Telam news agency, was traveling with a binder with information about the murders of two priests, Carlos Murias and Gabriel Longuevilley.
The complainants believe that the folders appeared later in the possession of Harguindeguy. A passenger who survived the crash - Arturo Pinto, who works as a prosecutor in the case - found that the car had been pursued by a Peugeot with several passengers on board and that the second vehicle they intercepted the pass and made them dump.
Bishop survived the rollover and his body was lying on the pavement, where he died soon after, according to Pinto. The body was found later in a cross next to the asphalt. The military dictatorship has always maintained that it was an accident, but justice has opened a cause for murder.
