.- At least 16 people were killed today in a stampede in the Nigerian city of Port Harcourt, where the African country's president, Goodluck Jonathan, was giving a rally, according to the digital version of local newspaper "Daily Independent". The stampede apparently occurred when security personnel could not control the crowd left the stadium and the crowd at the exit gates rushed against each other.
Many died of suffocation, the newspaper said. However, other local media put in at least 11 people were killed and the stampede began when police fired into the air to control the crowd, who fled in a stampede. About thirty people were injured in the incident on which the Nigerian president and the Democratic Popular Party leader ordered an investigation.
Jonathan is the first head of state of Niger Delta, whose area of Port Harcourt is the largest city, and has emerged as the winner of the elections to be held next April.
