A Danish court has charged three people with attempted act of terrorism and possession of weapons by planning an attack against a Danish newspaper, reported Thursday Lykke Sorensen, a member of the Security and Intelligence Service (PET), told reporters in Glostrup city. Police on Wednesday arrested four men in Denmark and one on suspicion of trying to attack the offices of Jyllands-Posten, the newspaper that published cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in 2005.
The three accused, two Tunisians and a Swede, pleaded not guilty to the charges, according to Sorensen. The head of the Danish Security Police, Jakob Scharf, said Wednesday that the arrests had prevented "an imminent terrorist attack" that was aimed at "killing the largest possible number" of people present at the Copenhagen office of the newspaper.
Scharf described the plot as an attack on "style of Bombay" in connection with the attacks in 2008 in India in which 10 Pakistani gunmen killed 166 people in a coordinated assault against key points, including two hotels and a Jewish. Police took the three suspects to the court in the district of Glostrup, Copenhagen, who ordered his detention for four weeks for further research.
One of those arrested, released "The three people will be arrested the next four weeks, and two will be in isolation," said Sorensen. "The investigation will continue in cooperation with the police, the PET and SAPO (Swedish Security Police)," he said. The fourth man arrested, an Iraqi refugee seeking asylum 26 years, was released for lack of evidence.
The fifth detainee, a Swede, 37, will be formally charged before a court in Sweden on Thursday, and is also expected to remain detained, according to a Swedish justice. The suspects, who entered Denmark on December 28 from Sweden, wanted to attack the January 1 block building that houses the Jyllands-Posten and other newspapers in Copenhagen, police said.
In connection with the arrests, police found plastic strips that could be used as handcuffs, a machine gun, a pistol and 100 cartridges.
