According to witnesses and medical sources, a Somali soldier killed at least seventeen civilians and wounded more than fifty, Monday, Jan. 31, after opening fire on a crowd in Mogadishu, apparently accidentally, with an antiaircraft gun. The incident occurred near the Banadir hospital in the south of the capital, where a dispute between Somali security forces had degenerated into fighting that killed a soldier a few minutes earlier.
Several witnesses reported seeing a soldier perched in the back of a truck fire on the crowd with a gun ZU-23 Soviet-made. "We have received fifty-five wounded and twelve dead. Five injured have since died of their wounds in hospital. The record now stands at seventeen dead," he told the press the hospital director Medina, the largest of the city, Mohammed Yusuf.
Several witnesses said they saw more of the victims brought to the hospital, families recover the corpse of their loved one on the scene, suggesting a balance may be even heavier. "Many victims were taken to the hospital quickly, but I saw about four corpses, including two women, being carried away by their relatives to bury them.
I've never seen such a tragedy," reported a witness.
