Protests continued in Algeria after a quiet morning

Clashes between protesters and security forces have resumed in Algiers Friday, January 7, while violent incidents erupted in Annaba in eastern Algeria. In Algiers, in the popular district of Belouizdad, groups of youths clashed with stones and glass bottles of police deployed en masse and heavily armed.

The police responded to protesters by using water cannons and tear gas. In Annaba, untouched so far by the youth protest movement against their insecurity and soaring prices, which now affects a dozen departments, violent clashes erupted after Friday prayers in the neighborhood of the Gasometer .

To 15 hours, hundreds of youths began throwing a hail of stones against policemen deployed since yesterday, especially around the office of the wilaya (province). The clashes were then extended to the neighboring city of oleanders before the protesters with barricades not cut the main artery leading to the university hospital of the city.

In Oran, the largest city in western Algeria, where many government buildings were ransacked Wednesday evening, clashes resumed Friday afternoon in the neighborhood of Little Lake, about 2 kilometers from the city. Dozens of youths attacked police with stones, who responded with tear gas.

For more than a week, small groups of young people complain around the country what they call their "bad manners", either for lack of employment - over 20% of young Algerians are unemployed - or lack of housing. Young people - those under 30 years represent 75% of 35.6 million Algerians - also denounce the high cost of living, favoritism and corruption.
