ISTANBUL - It ended with a disappointing stalemate in two days of talks on Iran's nuclear Istanbul between Tehran and Western powers. He said EU foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, who led the delegation of the 5 +1. Ashton, on behalf of the group composed of the countries of the Security Council (U.S., Russia, China, France, UK) plus Germany, said at a press conference concluding that there is no new meeting with Tehran, but that the door diplomacy remains open if Iran intends to demonstrate the peaceful purpose of its nuclear program: "The process can go forward if Iran chooses to respond positively," said Ashton.
"Now we are waiting to hear if Iran, after reflection," he added. For his part, Head of Delegation of Iran, Saeed Jalili, said instead that further meetings are planned, but for which have not yet been established neither a date nor a place. The positions appear to remain inconciliabilli.
Tehran spoke of readiness to "cooperate" with the West, provided it is recognized and respected because of his status as a nuclear country, and wants to hijack the debate on global disarmament and military nuclear facilities in Israel. And, despite the hopes of the 5 +1, Tehran has made clear in previous weeks did not want to even discuss their nuclear program or activity of uranium enrichment, which it considers its own right is not negotiable.
And so it was: the first day of the interim discussions, according to diplomatic sources, have not even touched on the topic, despite - this says a source quoted by Reuters at the talks - the Ashton "seems to have had some success in narrow gaps and Iranians seem to speak positively to her.
" Not even a second meeting yesterday afternoon, which lasted until late in the evening in Istanbul, was able to get to the heart of the matter. According to the BBC, a diplomatic source at this point has begun to express frustration with the behavior of Tehran.
