SAO PAULO, Jan. 15 (EUROPA Persse) - The Brazilian government reported that 601 people are already killed by the torrential rains that affect the mountainous region surrounding the city of Rio de Janeiro. Meanwhile, continue the search-rescue teams. Most victims have died in the city of New Fribourg (267) and Teresópolis (261), but there are also killed in Petrópolis (53), Sumidouro (18) and in Sao Jose do Vale do Rio Preto (2), as has informed the Secretary of State for Health and Civil Defense of Rio de Janeiro.
The governor of Rio, Sérgio Cabral, has been seen in first person the effect of rainfall in the mountains with his visit to Nova Friburgo and subsequent displacement of Macacu Cachoeiras, 40 kilometers from the first city. During the displacement Cabral witnessed the collapse of a hillside on the road, which partially broke.
"It's scary. Suddenly the water along the road, which was partially blocked, and begins to crumble," said Cabral told the newspaper "Folha." The Government has decreed three days at the federal level of official mourning, while in the state of Rio de Janeiro will be a mourning of seven days.
Cabral himself said you have to do "self" and "evaluation" of the incident, but said he still is not the time. The newspaper 'Folha' published a story Saturday that alleged that a November 2008 study commissioned by the state of Rio itself warned of the risk of a tragedy occurred in the mountainous region and noted especially the risk Petropolis and Nova Teresópolis Freiburg, specifically the municipalities hardest hit by the rains.
The study recommends the development of a map of risk areas and containment and recovery of vegetation.
