The governor of the Pakistani province of Punjab, Salman Taseer, a leading member of the ruling party in Pakistan, was killed Tuesday, January 4 in a shootout in Islamabad, said his spokesman. The shots rang out in a commercial district of Islamabad frequented by foreigners. According to two Pakistani channels, the car of the governor of Punjab province was near Market Kohsar when the shooting erupted.
According to the BBC, Salman Taseer was immediately taken to hospital where he died shortly after. His death comes as the government, dominated by the Pakistan People's Party, lost its majority in Sunday's Assembly after the defection of his main coalition partner. It could fuel further instability in the region.
